Good to Know

Visas

Bosnia and Herzegovina can only be entered with a valid passport. EU, American and Canadian citizens do not require a visa to enter the country. Most other people do need a visa, and getting one is possible through the Bosnian embassies in your respective countries.

Currency

Local currency is Convertible Mark - international abbreviation is BAM, i.e. KM is used locally (1.95KM=1€).

Catering establishments, shops, shopping malls and travel agencies in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot accept EURO payments since October 1st, 2010. Foreign currencies should be exchanged to the official local currency Convertible Mark (BAM or KM).

  • Coins: 5 ,10, 20 and 50 pfennig; 1, 2 i 5 KM
  • Banknotes: 10, 20, 50, 100 i 200 KM

Electricity

Electrical sockets (outlets) in Bosnia and Herzegovina are one of the two European standard electrical socket types: The "Type C" Europlug and the "Type E" and "Type F" Schuko. If your appliance's plug doesn't match the shape of these sockets, you will need a travel plug adapter in order to plug in.

Interacting with locals

Local people will almost always be very friendly. This is common to the region but Bosnian hospitality is something special. Bosnians will go out of their way to assist you in finding something and often invite someone to their home for a coffee. Once you enter someone's home as a guest, expect the red carpet treatment.

For the most part, young people here don't want to speak about the war or politics. They would rather hear about new music, cool movies, good books or just shoot the breeze with you. The older generation often brings the war and politics into conversation. As a visitor you will see BiH has a very dynamic blend of all walks of life. Some women dress in more traditional styles or will be covered. That by no means makes them different or unapproachable.
